Microplastic investigation training on the Gulf of Finland coast

On the sixth of October the training for teachers, students, and activists on the microplastics research in water bodies was held by Friends of the Baltic and Ecocentrum. The training took place on the Gulf of Finland coast. The Gulf is a part of the Baltic Sea - the water body, which annually gets about 40 tons of microplastics only from cosmetics. The training participants learned about what microplastics is, where it comes from, and how to stop microplastic pollution with individual solutions. Training participants also studied the methods of water sampling, and analysis of microplastics contamination in the water samples.

Today, one of the most important task for those who are engaged in the microparastics topic is the development of a database or areas where microplastics were found, what kind of particles, and in what quantity. Only after that it will be possible to talk about what sources of these dangerous particles dominate and how it can be reduced. Friends of the Baltic and Ecocentrum invite all interested parties to join the research and contribute to the solution of the problem of microplastic pollution.
