New demonstration dry toilet appeared in Volosovsky district of Leningrad region and is available for people with disabilities

May 26, at the art-estate "Kaikino-10" in the Kaikino village of Volosovsky district, the opening of the demonstration complex "Dry toilet with separate collection and composting" for people with disabilities took place.

The opening of the demonstration site and environmental master-class were conducted by the Friends of the Baltic NGO and environmental company «Ecocentrum» with support of the Baltic Sea Conservation Foundation, Coalition Clean Baltic and the company «Biolan». The opening ceremony was held in the framework of the festival, that was organized for older people by travel company "Sonata" and Kaikino Creative Projects NGO.

The event was attended by 45 guests. Within the framework of the festival, creative workshops and excursions were held for the participants. The environmental master-class also were held: on the cycle utilization of organic resources in domestic agriculture, the use of a dry toilet with composting of waste, the study of the content of nitrates in wells and natural waters, and different methods of wastewater treatment in rural areas.

This complex is the second established in the Leningrad region. The first site was installed by Ecocentrum Ltd in September 2017 in Fauna gardening community of Lomonosov district and works for the visitors.

The complex includes a dry toilet in a wooden house, equipped with information stands, and a street thermal composter with a volume of 250 liters. In the toilet, the waste is separated in the seat area – the liquid fraction enters the canister, the solid accumulates in buckets, from which, as it accumulates, it is carried to the street composter for maturation. After the aging of urine and composting of solid waste there will be a fertilizer suitable for use in the garden area.

The dry toilet can be considered as the most environmentally friendly way to clean up toilet waste, because it not only protects the environment, but allows to completely turn waste into a valuable resource - fertilizer. After all, only one person per year produces: 550 kg of liquid waste (urine) - which contains 4 kg of nitrogen, 0.37 kg of phosphorus and 1 kg of potassium; 60 kg of solid waste (feces with toilet paper) - in which 0.55 kg of nitrogen, 0.18 kg of phosphorus and 0.36 kg of potassium.

A dry toilet is a relatively inexpensive replacement for cesspools and unsealed filtration wells. The dry toilet excludes the entry of contaminated effluents into the soil and underground water, protecting water bodies and wells from bacterial contamination and nitrogen and phosphorus saturation. Over saturation of water bodies with nitrogen and phosphorus leads to overgrowth of water bodies, deterioration of living conditions of fish and other aquatic organisms, loss of recreational attractiveness. In addition to the dry toilets, the residents of rural areas without central canalization also use septic tanks (treatment level for nitrogen and phosphorus - 60%), the local biological wastewater treatment plants (the degree of purification up to 98%). Dry toilet is one of the available ways to clean the toilet waste water ("black water"), in addition to them for cleaning kitchen and bathroom drains ("gray water") is recommended to install filters for gray water or septic tanks with post-treatment systems.

A new demonstration dry toilet is the second dry toilet on the territory of art-estate. The first one was created by owners. During group visits, one toilet is not enough. Now visitors have the opportunity to compare two different types of dry toilets-with filtration (first one) and separation of fractions (new one). The peculiarity of the new toilet is the availability of a ramp for people with disabilities who are often visitors of the art-estate. The idea to install the ramp was proposed by the owners of the art-estate and supported by Ecocentrum Ltd. Also, the toilet house has an unusual design - according to the idea of the owners, one wall is translucent. Now the creative art-estate has eco-friendly and creative toilet.
